General Sir Harry Chauvel was an outstanding leader and commanded the 1st Light Horse Brigade at Gallipoli. This year the Australian “Chauvel Australian Light Horse Ride’ will be passing through our area from early March until the 16th April 2025. The next stop after Gerogery will be Henty, the Rock and Wagga Wagga. They will be visiting memorials, statues and schools during this journey.
Chauvel is best known for leading his Light Horse division through the Sinai and the successful battles he fought along the way. The most famous of these was the successful charge of Beersheba in 1917. This was to be the last successful cavalry charge in history.
Did you also know that his daughter was Elyne Mitchell (Nee Chauvel) was the author of the successful Australian series of books “The Silver Brumby”? She also wrote of her father’s exploits during the war in her book “Light Horse: The Story of Australia’s Mounted Troops” published in 1978.
We are very lucky to have active members of the Light Horse in Walla Walla, who regularly support us for ANZAC Day services.
