At 10:00 am on Saturday the 26th of October 2024 my colleague Tanja and I conducted a tour of the German Pioneer Cemetery and select graves of Ebenezer (now Walla Walla). The centenary celebrations of Zion Lutheran Church, constructed in 1924, included this event.
The tour included images and information about the “Trek” families of Michael and Agnes Wenke, Peter and Julianne Christiane Hennersdorf, Johann Gottleib Snr and Anna Rosine Klemke, Andreas and Anna Mickan, Johann Gottlieb Jnr and Johanne Louise Klemke, Johann Andreas and Maria Lieschke, Heinrich Ferdinand and Julianne Auguste Wilhelmine Schmidt, Johann Christian and Dorothea Christiane Terlich and Friedrich Wilhelm Luhrs. We also included Pastor Gottlob Simpfendorfer and wife as he was a long serving Pastor of the church, as well as the congregational schoolteacher Franz Zilius.
The highlight of this tour was Tanja reading the headstones in German followed by the English translation.
