Knecht Ruprecht, the Wendish anti-Santa Claus, is believed to be skulking from house to house during this time of year. Wendish folklore tells us that Ruprecht is St. Nicholas’ hired hand. However, he is a creature of nightmares, with his ugly Halloween-like mask.
The children of the house would know he had arrived when they heard a loud thumping at the door. It would be Ruprecht screaming and shouting to be let in. In fact, it would be a young man of the village in disguise. His Advent task is to frighten the boys and girls, whip those who required punishment, and carry away the naughty children in his black bag. His presence certainly made the children behave, thus preparing the way for jolly St. Nick with his sleigh full of toys and other presents.
The Wends are certainly a strange and mysterious people, as per their folklore and unique customs. They are also devout Christians, loyal, and industrious. Despite being ethnically Slavic, it is not explicitly known where their original origins lie. It is also interesting to note that many scholars agree that Martin Luther’s wife was a Wend.
Remind your children to behave or receive a visit from Knecht Ruprecht!
